Delivering Critical Connectivity in a Constrained Industrial Site
In Kearny, New Jersey, expanding wireless coverage near the Pulaski Skyway and New Jersey Turnpike connector required a highly coordinated solution within the active operations of a busy trucking yard. Our team provided design services for a new 150-foot monopole to meet the carrier’s coverage needs while navigating strict site, zoning, and environmental constraints.
The required antenna height was driven by the need to clear the adjacent bridge infrastructure, while the site itself presented challenges including limited access, flood-prone conditions, and restrictions on ground disturbance.
Engineering Around Constraints
Working in collaboration with CellBlocks, our team designed a precast post-tensioned foundation that could be installed without conventional construction methods. The system met all structural requirements and was successfully installed in a single day, minimizing disruption to ongoing site operations.
The design also incorporated a 28-foot equipment shelter with backup generator, along with steel stairs and cantilevered access platforms, all supported without additional ground disturbance. Careful coordination ensured the entire installation functioned as a cohesive, efficient system within a tightly constrained footprint.
Designing for Flood Conditions and Long-Term Performance
Located on a low-lying peninsula surrounded by the Passaic River, the site required careful consideration of flood risk and long-term stability. Our team established the appropriate flood hazard elevation for the foundation and secured necessary approvals from NJDEP.
To achieve the required elevation and protect against washout, a structural wood retaining wall was designed to support the compacted subgrade. The system leverages the weight of the precast foundation itself to provide lateral stability, ensuring the integrity of the installation under challenging environmental conditions.
The result is a resilient, high-performance telecommunications installation that delivers essential connectivity while responding to the realities of a complex and constrained site.
