Rebuilding a Jersey Shore Landmark for the Future
When Superstorm Sandy devastated Seaside Heights in 2012, it swept away much of the Borough’s iconic Casino Pier, a destination that had defined the shoreline experience for generations. More than five years later, the rebuilding effort presented an opportunity not only to restore what was lost, but to create a structure capable of supporting the next era of coastal recreation.
Our team was engaged to provide structural and marine engineering services for the new pier, designing a system that could support modern attractions while withstanding the forces of future coastal storms. Originally constructed in 1932, Casino Pier had long been a centerpiece of the Jersey Shore, and its replacement required a careful balance of durability, performance, and respect for its legacy.
Engineering a Resilient Structure Beneath the Boardwalk
While the finished pier maintains the familiar character of a traditional boardwalk, its structure tells a different story. Beneath the surface, a system of concrete and steel elements provides the strength and stability needed to support a modern steel roller coaster while resisting wave forces, scour, and long-term coastal impacts.
The design meets post-Sandy standards for coastal construction, incorporating FEMA requirements, ASCE 7 loading criteria, and guidance from the FEMA Coastal Construction Manual. Consideration of sea level rise and future storm conditions was integral to the approach, ensuring that the pier is prepared not only for today’s environment, but for what lies ahead.
Today, Casino Pier features an expanded lineup of rides and attractions, anchored by Hydrus, a steel roller coaster that rises more than 70 feet and delivers a dynamic experience over its 1,050-foot track. The rebuilt pier restores a beloved destination while reinforcing the resilience of the shoreline.
Through thoughtful design and engineering, the project ensures that Casino Pier will continue to serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike—bringing energy back to Seaside Heights and securing its place on the Jersey Shore for generations to come.
