West Front Street Over Swimming River: A County Bridge Built with Care

Bridge S-17 on County Route 10 carries West Front Street over the Swimming River at the boundary of Red Bank Borough and Middletown Township. Our team provided Monmouth County with construction inspection and contract administration services throughout the reconstruction of this federally funded crossing.

The new structure is an approximately 488-foot-long curved steel girder bridge consisting of six spans of roughly 80 feet each, supported on pile bents and pile-supported abutments. Approach embankments were confined by steel sheet pile retaining walls, a decision driven by the need to minimize impacts to adjacent wetlands and neighboring properties.

Built to Perform, Finished to Belong

The project went well beyond structural replacement. Ornamental improvements give the bridge a visual quality that reflects its setting: decorative recessed brick panel parapets with ball and cap railing, ornamental lighting, and detailed approach treatments that elevate the crossing from purely functional to something the community can take pride in.

The scope also included approach roadway improvements with minor widening, concrete sidewalks on both sides providing a fully ADA-accessible route, stormwater drainage facilities, highway lighting, and new guide rail treatments. Every element was coordinated to balance structural performance, environmental sensitivity, and the kind of finish details that distinguish a county bridge done well from one that simply gets the job done.
