Student Voice, Modern Design at American University’s TDR

Students told American University exactly what they wanted: less dining hall, more destination. The Terrace Dining Room, AU’s largest dining facility, had served the campus for years but the student experience had evolved beyond what the space could offer. The feedback was clear. They wanted variety, energy, and a space that felt more like a fast-casual restaurant district than a traditional cafeteria.

Our team delivered on that vision. The redesigned TDR features a collection of independent dining concepts offering diverse food options that cater to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences. Flexible seating arrangements accommodate everything from solo study sessions to group meals, and the overall environment is designed to encourage gathering, socializing, and lingering in a space that feels vibrant without feeling rushed.

More Than a Meal, a Center of Campus Life

The transformation goes beyond the menu. Material choices, lighting, and spatial flow were all reconsidered to create an atmosphere that draws students in and gives them reasons to stay. The result is a facility that functions as a central hub for campus life, not just at mealtimes but throughout the day. For a university investing in student experience, the Terrace Dining Room is proof that the spaces between classes matter as much as the classrooms themselves.
